Centennial Scouting on the Mall
(July 23 - August 8, 2010) Be part of the showcase of All Things Scouting, situated on the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial. This will be a continuous 16 day presence in which our very own Scouts will demonstrate every aspect of Scouting in the Nation's Capital, including Scout craft, merit badges, camping, service projects, and geo-Scouting. We will be joined by Adventure Base 100, the National BSA touring adventure show. Adventure Base 100 began its national tour at the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena, California, on New Year's Day.This edition of Scouting on the Mall will be the longest, continuous Scouting presence on the National Mall in the history of the Boy Scouts of America! It all started right here in Washington, DC on February 8, 1910. For more information check out the Centennial Scouting on the Mall page.
Grand Centennial Parade (July 25, 2010) Everyone loves a parade...especially when it's for you! From a historical prospective, nothing comes close to this except for the first National Jamboree in 1937. That was when President Franklin Roosevelt reviewed 27,000 Scouts who lined both sides of Constitution Avenue for three miles! On the day before the opening of the 100th Anniversary National Jamboree, our Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, and Explorers will be joined by Scouting units from all around the country to form a BSA Grand Centennial Parade on Constitution Avenue in Washington, DC. There will be floats, marching bands, balloons, horses, historic uniforms, lots of flags, and thousands of Scouts marching and reviewing! Visit the Centennial Parade page for more information.
NCAC Get-Fit Scouts (Fall 2009, ongoing): www.boyscouts-ncac.org/getfit Activities will enhance the physical readiness of Scouts and adults in units throughout the Council, and provide opportunities for annual national fitness competitions. Games and contests will be featured at the Centennial Camporee and Scouting on the Mall.
NCAC Prepares to Celebrate the BSA 100th Anniversary
Vision: A Purpose-Driven Anniversary Celebration
NCAC will deliver a purpose-driven celebration ? a sustained and coordinated effort that will allow us to share our powerful story in every community we serve.
Without question, this will include events around which we will gather to celebrate our important milestone. But, so too will this include an assertive and thoughtful effort to better communicate the tremendous value of Scouting in the National Capital Area Council while engaging Scouts, leaders, alumni, family, friends, and the public throughout the entire council.
A purpose-driven celebration includes activities that are fun and inspiring ? but also deliver meaningful results that will strengthen Scouting. With this as our celebration vision, we will conclude 2010 with more youth involved, more adults serving as volunteers, more financial supporters, and more positive impressions of Scouting throughout our communities.
Celebration Objectives
Our council plan has been developed and targeted to achieve these three outcomes:
All Scouts have an opportunity to participate in a centennial celebration.
